“Santeria is a danced religion because dancing expresses the fundamental dynamism of the life force.  Words cannot express the mystery.  The world is a dance.  Its meaning lies in its constant movement.  The dance is the expression of this mystery.”   Santeria: African Spirits in America by Joseph M. Murphy

The tradition of Afro-Cuban dance is rooted in the dance and drum traditions of the Yoruba in Africa, transported to to Cuba during the era of enslavement.  Facial expressions are as important as other movements that relate to mythology, ancestors, and storytelling.

Randy wanted a set of photos to reflect his off-stage personality. Since he loves to fish we chose Lake Hiawatha in Minneapolis for its scenic shoreline. I used my iPhone app The Photographer’s Ephemeris to get the data I needed on sunrise time and direction.  We left for the lake at 7am to get set up in time for a 7:24am sunrise.  The light was beautiful and I got this shot right off the bat.

Randy SabienYesterday I did a photo shoot with jazz violinist Randy Sabien who needs updated photos for his web site and promotional materials.  We did the shoot at the St. Paul University Club which has a lot of nice locations.  We shot this one in the library.  I bounced on-camera flash to the left.  To bounce the flash I used the Spinlight 360, which I found out about from reading Neil van Nieikirk’s  excellent blog on flash photography.  The Spinlight 360 is a relatively inexpensive gadget and it’s very effective.   To go with the ambience, Randy wore his favorite smoking jacket!

“80% of what we perceive is visual information.”

A Web Site is Mandatory

Today, if you have a business, you need a web site to be taken seriously. Everyone realizes it and everyone wants a web site. But paying for a web site is expensive. It costs a lot because a skilled professional spends a lot of hours collating materials, creating a design, and programming the code behind it all.

Cutting Costs

There are less expensive alternatives to hiring someone to build you a custom web site. You could  write a blog, create a Facebook page, or use a template. This post investigates the pros and cons of using templates to create your web site.

I’ve always enjoyed the 7 deadly sins as thematic material for art and literature.  So I got a big kick out of the following use of the 7 sins to structure a narrative on bad web design.   Its origin is a webinair by Seth Rosenblatt at the American Marketing Association.  It came to me via a newsletter by Lynn Ericson from Ericson Mitchell.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

First I photographed the puppet as a standard portrait:

puppet against white fabric

Then I wrapped it in black fabric and startled it with a spotlight pointing up towards the face!

I took this image and used Photoshop to paint around the face and hands with black.  Then I used the perspective tool (Edit – Transform – Perspective) to distort the proportions.  Finally, I used Curves to saturate the colors.transformed in photoshop
